Blinded by the Floodlights best songs of 2024

From Fat Dog to Amyl & the Sniffers, our top 25 songs of the year from our favourite artists of 2024.

The period between Christmas and New Year is the most glorious time of the year, right? There's the inevitable influx of chocolate treats, turkey dinners as well as the accompanying break from doing anything remotely productive. We love it.

At Blinded By the Floodlights we've taken a break from such laziness to reflect on the year that's just been within the indie music world, taking great delight in listening back to the many, many songs from the past 12 months we've enjoyed. Here are our favourite tracks.

Positions 25-11

25, Been Stellar - 'Scream from New York, NY'

24, Declan McKenna – 'Mulholland’s Dinner & Wine'

23, Arab Strap - 'Bliss'

22, Anthony Szmierek – 'Rafters'

21. Jamie XX – 'Treat Each Other Right'

20. Fred Again… (ft. Anderson. Paak) – 'Places To Be'

19. Gurriers - 'Approachable'

18. The Smile – 'Bending Hectic'

17. The Dare - 'Perfume'

16. Japandroids - 'Chicago'

15. SPRINTS – 'Up and Comer'

14. Amyl & the Sniffers – 'Big Dreams'

13. Vampire Weekend – 'Capricorn'

12. Father John Misty - 'Screamland'

11. Yard Act – 'We Make Hits'

Now on to the top 10 songs of the year.

10. Sam Fender – 'People Watching'

To say Sam Fender had a hard job living up to the success of 'Seventeen Going Under' would be an understatement. Thankfully he smashed it with comeback single 'People Watching', maintaining his lofty standards ahead of his new album set for release in February.

9. Fat Dog - 'Wither'

Fat Dog were one of the most unique bands to emerge this year and their bonkers fifth single from debut WOOF. showed exactly why they were worthy of paying attention to.

8. The Cure – 'Endsong'

The Cure's comeback record Songs of a Lost World was nothing short of remarkable and it was the 10-minute closer 'Endsong' that convinced us even more so of the band's enduringly solemn appeal.

7. Been Stellar – I Have the Answer

Been Stellar were another new band I couldn't get enough of this year: a young artist putting their spin on a familiar New York rock 'n' roll sound. We could've chosen any number of tunes from their debut, but we've gone for closer 'I Have the Answer' - one which provided an epic finale of euphoria and class.

6. Fontaines D.C. – 'Starburster'

What else is there to say about Fontaines that hasn't already been said? This year they completely changed their sound and aesthetic once again and lead single 'Starburster' was a cookie, bizarre and impressive first taste of what was to come on fourth record Romance.

5. Royel Otis – 'If Our Love Is Dead'

Aussie indie-pop duo Royel Otis were a refreshing find this year and they won many a new admirer after the release of breezy debut record PRATTS & PAINS. Later year single 'If Our Love is Dead' was another catchy pop that was on heavy rotation on my Spotify upon release.

4. Amyl & the Sniffers – 'Chewing Gum'

This year, Aussie punk four-piece Amyl & the Sniffers expanded their sound into something more universal while remaining the raucous outfit we've grown to know and love. 'Chewing Gum' is as sugary and pop a sound as we've heard from them, and a pretty darn addictive listen too!

3. Wunderhorse - 'Silver'

Wunderhorse delivered our album of 2024 so it was only fair we gave it some serious thought to which song of theirs to pick for this list - again, it could've been any number from Midas! 'Silver' though edges it as my favourite for its singalong capabilities and emotive power.

2. DIIV – 'Brown Paper Bag'

Ok, so this one was rather on the bleak side of things! But how easy was it to get lost in that wall of sound and those darkened shoegaze sonics? My most played song on Spotify of the year, though pipped to the number one spot by another choice as my favourite...

1. Fontaines D.C. – 'Favourite'

It had to be didn't it? The appropriately named 'Favourite' sounds joyful with a heavy dose of melancholia. Soundtracking many an Instagram reel and providing the highlight moment of their Glastonbury Park Stage headline set, it felt like the defining anthem of 2024.
